Contents
💡 Today’s US market in three lines
① Today’s three stocks: Regeneron · Eli Lilly · Cheniere Energy
② What rose today: oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, consumer staples
③ What pulled back: semiconductors, technology, cloud computing
Today’s Sector Relative Strength (RS)

- October ended with the worst day for stocks since June. Intel fell -28.58% after its outlook missed estimates, and the chip group went down with it. The Nasdaq closed at 25,437.00 (-2.86%), the S&P 500 at 7,580.07 (-1.82%), and the Dow at 51,770.31 (-1.09%). AMD lost -10.88%, Broadcom -5.48%, and Nvidia -4.22%. Amazon slipped -1.41% after reports focused on its record cash burn, which added to worries about AI spending. The VIX rose to 19.42 from 17.20. Oil and gas producers moved the other way.

- Of the 129 ETFs in our universe, 28 closed higher and 99 fell. Two were flat. Energy (XLE) led the 11 sectors at +1.91%. Technology (XLK) was last at -4.89%. Six sectors rose and five fell. The equal-weight S&P 500 (RSP) lost only -0.79%, so the damage sat mostly in the biggest names.
Today’s Leading Sectors TOP 5
| ETF | 1-Day | RS Rank 1M | Short-Term | Mid-Term | Long-Term |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iShares U.S. Oil and Gas Exploration (IEO) | +2.42% | 99 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
| Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) | +1.91% | 99 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
| SPDR Oil and Gas Exploration (XOP) | +2.13% | 98 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
| Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU) | +0.67% | 97 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔽 |
| United States Oil Fund (USO) | +0.38% | 96 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
- Energy now holds four of the five spots. Oil (USO) slipped from first to fifth. Oil and gas explorers (XOP) and utilities (XLU) came in. Health care providers (IHF) fell to 93 and cybersecurity (IHAK) to 90, so both left the table.
Why They’re Strong — Sector Issues

· Oil and gas exploration (IEO) — Up +2.42%, the day’s best gain, sheet RS rank 99. Refiners did most of the lifting: Valero rose +3.92%, Phillips 66 +3.37%, and PBF Energy +3.26%. Chevron gained +1.75% after reporting third-quarter results the same morning.

· Global pharmaceuticals (PPH) — Up +2.06%, sheet RS rank 89. Takeda rose +4.50%, Jazz +3.92%, and Eli Lilly +3.19%. Regeneron jumped +13.33% on its third-quarter report, though it sits in biotech funds, not this one.

· Consumer staples (XLP) — Up +1.41%, sheet RS rank 94. Mondelez gained +3.85%, Hershey +3.33%, and PepsiCo +2.65%. We found no single report behind the move. It looks like money leaving chips for steadier earners.

· Agribusiness (MOO) — Up +1.56%, sheet RS rank 58. It is still below its 1-quarter average, so this is a small move off a weak base.
What Changed From Yesterday
- The GLP-1 obesity fund (OZEM) posted the biggest one-day rank gain, 47 to 64. Agtech (KROP) followed, 29 to 45. Global pharmaceuticals (PPH) climbed from 81 to 95.

- Cloud computing (WCLD) lost 20 points, 96 to 76, and most of it was Friday’s price drop. Timber, natural gas, and residential REITs are left off the chart because most of their gains came from a weak day a month ago leaving the window. Thursday’s report called the defense move a rebound, not a new uptrend. Aerospace and defense (XAR) fell -3.37% on Friday, which fits that reading.
1-Month RS Trend

- Oil and gas exploration (IEO) rose from 76 to 96 over the window. Global pharmaceuticals (PPH) climbed from 42 to 95, and agribusiness (MOO) from 40 to 62. Semiconductors (SOXX) slid from 33 to 7, and technology (XLK) from 64 to 25. Pharma made the biggest climb of the five.
RS Breakdown Warnings

- Cloud computing (CLOU) fell from 83 to 47, the deepest drop. Software (IGV), cybersecurity (CIBR), WisdomTree cloud (WCLD), the metaverse fund (METV), and video games (ESPO) joined it. All six match the sheet’s direction over the same five sessions.
RS Rebound Signals

- No fund qualified on Friday. Five candidates were dropped because Friday’s price fell, including aerospace and defense (XAR) and genomics (GNOM). The broad sell-off erased every rebound signal.
Today’s Top Rising Sectors TOP 5 (by 1-day %)
| ETF | 1-Day | RS Rank 1M | Short-Term | Mid-Term | Long-Term |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iShares U.S. Oil and Gas Exploration (IEO) | +2.42% | 99 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
| SPDR Oil and Gas Exploration (XOP) | +2.13% | 98 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
| VanEck Pharmaceutical (PPH) | +2.06% | 89 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
| Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) | +1.91% | 99 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
| First Trust Natural Gas (FCG) | +1.81% | 95 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔺 |
Why They Rose
- Energy took four spots and pharma one. All five sit above their 1-month, 1-quarter, and 1-year averages. That is rare on a day when the S&P 500 fell -1.82%. On the other side, blockchain (BKCH) -9.13%, semiconductors (SOXX) -8.24%, meme stocks (MEME) -7.95%, and digital transformation (DAPP) -7.81% led the decliners. Gold fell -3.63%, and silver (SLV) lost -5.67%.
Leading Sectors: Oil and Gas, Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Staples
- ① Oil and gas exploration ranks 99 on the sheet and rose on a down day. The leadership is a month old and still holding.
- ② Pharmaceuticals rank 89 and climbed most over the month. Lilly’s and Regeneron’s reports give the move earnings support.
- ③ Consumer staples rank 94. The gain came without a clear report, so it reads as defense against the chip sell-off.
- ④ The last report covered the October 29 close. Its three picks from that close to Friday’s: Herc Holdings -4.71%, Fortive -0.93%, and Elbit Systems -3.43%, against -1.82% for the S&P 500. Only Fortive beat the market. Elbit also closed below the $790.00 level the report flagged. Recorded as is.
